Blog Post #1

Overall, I’m mostly excited to learn practical online skills through this class, though i’m also looking forward to learning about the application of technology to teaching. Because I never had a computer at home growing up, I lacked many of the skills that my peers gained through practice. It took a few years with school-issued chrome-books to figure out how to work word and powerpoint, though my typing skills never got better. Since then, I haven’t had the time nor the motivation to learn these skills or how to navigate through various online sites. So, I’m very grateful and excited to be learning and exercising those skills in this class.

As for prior experience, I’ve worked as a formal TA in my senior year with freshmen studying honors world history. I worked with powerpoint and a little bit of canva to create powerpoint and interactive class assignments. As for being a student, I worked with Word and Powerpoint in Office 365, as well as canva for presenting. Other than those programs, unfortunately, I don’t have much other experience.

I have a wide and unorganized learning network. I love learning, and as such I like to engage with as much educational media as I can. I regularly engage with various newsletters about current day events and follow ups on various political changes. As a Floridian, born and raised in tallahassee, as well as someone who wants to become an educator, I’ve been watching the conversation around censorship and controversial literature, and the ethics of removing books in the curriculum of public schools. For personal learning, I prefer physical media such as textbooks and biographies (I prefer Allison Weir and various published professors and doctors). However, I’ve recently signed up for Substack, which is an app made with the purpose of hosting various writings on different media and subjects. The substacks I most engage with are culture and fashion essays, though recently I’ve been delving into philosophy and psychology as well. I’m interested in anything that has to do with how humans interact with the world and how the world interacts with them.

  1. Hello!
I also love Substack!! I have never met another person who uses it! I am so glad that you like it, and I really hope that you find more essays that scratch your itch. I highly recommend that you look into some Youtube video essays. If you love culture and fashion essays, I highly suggest the channels Mina Le, Kaz Rowe, and Jordan Theresa!

  2. Hi, Emma!
I find it so interesting that you have experience as a TA, and, honestly, I'm a bit jealous. I also find my learning network to be super unorganized most of the time. I think I'll probably be checking out Substack now as well. I've never really known where to look for written essays, although I have been known to like a good video essay. I commend you for preferring physical media and I definitely encourage you to stick to that as it is starting to become a dying breed. Thank you for sharing!
